Earn While You Learn” - Apprenticeship Can Be the Answer

What is a Registered Apprenticeship?

Registered apprenticeships are formalized career training programs that offer a combination of structured on-the-job training and related technical instruction to employees to train them in occupations that demand a high level of skill.  Skills, knowledge, and experience are the building blocks for success.  They are also the foundation for apprenticeship training.  There are over 250 employers in Eastern Iowa that offer rewarding career opportunities in registered apprenticeship programs, and the number continues to grow everyday.

Registered apprenticeships are competency-based and/or time-based, industry-driven training for a vast range of occupations.  Currently, there are over 850 occupations in a multitude of industries that are recognized as apprenticeable, and more are being added all the time.  This diverse and virtually unlimited range of vocations includes jobs in information technology, manufacturing, construction, utilities, theater, health care, food service and many more.

How long is an Apprenticeship?

Registered apprenticeship programs can last from one to six years. The course length and content is determined by the industry's occupational needs.  During this time, apprentices work and learn under the direction of experienced journey  workers.  Over time, apprentices are provided the diversity and complexity of training that leads to becoming highly skilled in their chosen occupations.  As they gain skill, they are compensated through an increase in wages.

What are the benefits of Registered Apprenticeship?

When individuals complete a registered apprenticeship program, they will possess the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to succeed in their chosen occupation.  Other benefits include:

  • Nationally-recognized Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship

  • High-wage opportunities that meet or exceed those of college graduates

  • Challenging and interesting work in a wide range of occupations

  • The opportunity to “earn as you learn”

  • Comprehensive career training, which in most cases is paid for by the employer

  • Increased marketability and job security

  • Opportunity to earn college credit in many occupational areas
